Banished, starved and ignored, the Dark Feminine becomes toxic...

Dismissed and vilified, the Dark Feminine takes every opportunity she can to rise up and grab us unaware and bring us screaming and kicking into the depths. Today we call this the dark night of the soul. It is a time when, for no apparent reason, the life that we know and have worked so hard to create vanishes, and we become helpless victims of fate.

  • We lose a job.
  • A relationship erupts violently.
  • There is a death of a beloved.
  • We are seriously injured or ill.

Try as we might, we can not rationalize the fate that has befallen us. We feel abandoned, our essence feels annihilated; we become hamsters on the wheel of “woe is me… what did I do to deserve such pain? I am a good person…” We rely on rational thought and turn to family and friends for our ego need to be validated as the wronged one. Paradoxically, this outer world validation is the last thing we need.

What we need is to honor this call of the dark feminine as a call to to transformation. We need to follow Inanna's lead. It is in just this way that the myth opens:

From the Great Above she opened her ear to the Great Below.
From the Great Above the goddess opened her ear to the Great Below.
From the Great Above Inanna opened her ear to the Great Below.
..

In the Sumerian language, "ear" meant wisdom. So to open her ear to the Great Below was to open to the wisdom of the inner world.
